Hartismere 957 Royal Ark Mariners Bell

Hartismere Bell

Over many years certain Lodges use unique customs at their Festive Boards from truncheons used as gavels, railway lamps on tables, and unbelievable, a specimen pot for collections. When the opportunity came up to buy a bell from Bro Pete Gillings Military Surplus Emporium in Diss, a larger than life character and a member of the Faithful 85 Craft Lodge, meeting at Harleston. He very kindly hunted around and sourced one for the Lodge, which has several ex-navel ratings among its ranks.

Pete sadly passed to the Grand lodge above recently but his son Simon, saved the bell for the lodge. Bro Chris Hoelzer collected and paid for the bell, Bro Bernard Thorndyke made a plinth for it out of local oak with two brass engravings; one in memory of Pete and the other Hartismere RAM 957.

The bell was duly tolled at our festive board by the Worshipful Commander, Kaz with much jollification and merriment. It is intended to pass the bell onto each Worshipful Commander annually on nights of Installation at the festive board thereby creating yet another new tradition.
