2017 Peter Churchyard Memorial Lecture

EAIMM Sep2017 13

This prestigious lecture is organised and promoted by the East Anglian Installed Mark Masters Lodge No 1418 (EAIMM). The invitation is given by the WM of the lodge, and this year W.Bro Tony Harvey PGSD (image, centre) was invited to be the Lecturer. His chosen topic was the Mark Benevolent Fund (MBF). Bro Harvey is a well known and respected author, lecturer and researcher. The choice of topic was apt as the MBF is celebrating 150 years of service to the members of the GLMMM.

Over 60 Mark Masons from the Province and beyond enjoyed a fascinating talk on the beginnings of the fund and some explanation as to the why the fund was developed. It was interesting to note that the ideals stated 150 years ago still are the basis for todays grants and support. W.Bro.Harvey touched on the changes made to the fund over the intervening years and the capital growth from about £50 to some £16 million today. He explained how the money was sourced and the system enjoyed today of a Province hosting a festival, such as ours in East Anglia's in 2013.

He outlined some of the more recent large grants to organisations such as the RNLI, St John and Hope for Tomorrow. He also gave us an insight as to how the grants both large and small are considered by the trustees. I think we all felt comforted by the dedication, thought and compassion extended on our behalf by the trust.

He then postulated a future, drawing a verbal picture of the future of the MBF, its relationship with the MCF and its relationship with you the donators and supporters of the fund, and also petitioners of the fund. He explained that the MBF enjoys close cooperation with the UGLE charity (MCF) who work together if possible to ensure the petitioner derives maximum support.

I was not sure if my attention would be held for the paper, but Brethren it was a strong, enjoyable and positive lecture on our charity, laced with humour, full of figures and numerous references to the good works it does. W.Bro.Harvey finished leaving me wanting more; and I do not mean a G&T!

The EAIMM is open to all past masters of the mark degree, meets twice a year September and March. If you would like to join with us and share in these unique lectures, support the work of the Province and meet enthusiastic, keen and friendly mark masons simply email the Lodge Secretary, This email address is being protected from spambots.
